Join an exclusive early-morning tour to Big Almaty Lake, a stunning alpine reservoir nestled in the Trans-Ili Alatau mountains. Depart early to experience this natural wonder up close. Since the summer of 2023, the lake has been closed to general tourist access due to its importance as a strategic water source for Almaty. Originally developed in the 1950s-60s for hydroelectric power, the lake now serves as a crucial drinking water supply, making it off-limits to visitors. Despite these restrictions, you can experience this natural wonder up close. Depart early, around 6-7 AM, and take a scenic drive through the mountains to the lake. To preserve the area, entry is restricted, and you will switch to a special vehicle for the final leg of the journey, right up to the lake’s shore.
