The Lermontov State Academic Russian Drama Theatre has its origins in 1933 when the Russian Drama Theatre was established in Almaty. Its current name is in fact the third it has had, as in 1964 the theatre was named after Mikhail Lermontov, a tribute to the 150th anniversary of the great Russian poet, and in 1974 it received the title of the Academic Theatre.
Today the Lermontov State Academic Russian Drama Theatre is a revered place for Almaty residents and visitors who appreciate the true art of such celebrated artists. The programme includes performances of the works are classics of Russian and world literature, including 'Hotel of Two Worlds' 'Freaks' and 'How Do I Free Myself?' The theatre is bold and stages ambitious performances, and caters for its younger audience members by offering a number of interesting plays for children, 'The Scarlet Flower,' 'Glass Slipper' and 'Vasilisa the Beautiful.'
In recent years the theatre has successfully toured and participated in theatre festivals across Kazakhstan and abroad.
